Suppose Ben Bitdiddle changes the definition of the bank account to protect the viewing of the balance:

(define (make-account balance)
  (define (withdraw amount)
    (if (>= balance amount)
(begin (set! balance (- balance amount))
               balance)
        "Insufficient funds"))
  (define (deposit amount)
    (set! balance (+ balance amount))
    balance)
  (let ((protected (make-serializer)))
    (define (dispatch m)
(cond ((eq? m 'withdraw) (protected withdraw))
            ((eq? m 'deposit) (protected deposit))
            ((eq? m ' balance)
((protected (lambda () balance)))) ; serialized
            (else (error "Unknown request -- MAKE-ACCOUNT" m))))
    dispatch))

Since balance is only accessed once during the processing of the balance request, whether serializing it has any effect depends on whether this operation is atomic.

If it is, then although it is possible to get an out of date answer if a withdrawal or deposit occurs after the balance has been read but before it has been reported to you, it’s not clear that there is anything wrong with this because the balance was correct at the time and is fully consistent with the state of the account at some point in time.

If, however, reading the balance is not an atomic operation, then protecting it will be worthwhile – otherwise, it would be possible to read two incomplete balances yielding an inconsitent total.
